How to Treat Minor Sports Injuries

Many sports injuries such as minor sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method.

REST – avoid exercise and reduce your daily physical activity.

ICE – An ice pack may be applied to the affected area for 15-20 minutes every two to three hours ensuring the ice pack does not directly touch the skin causing cold burns.

COMPRESSION – Using a correctly fitted bandage or support during the day can help to provide compression and reduce swelling. Always ensure the bandage or support is not too tight and does not restrict blood flow.

ELEVATION – Elevating the affected body part above your heart level after injury can help to reduce swelling.

In addition to the above, using an elasticated or neoprene support can help to reduce stress on the affected area and provide stability to aid the healing process and avoid further injury.

Always consult a healthcare professional before attempting to treat a sports injury.
